It was when I was still a college student, that I found about the Brazilian author. Some of my classmates were avid readers of his works and it intrigued me. They talked most of the times about the significant insights a reader can get from those novels that the author wrote. My interest to search and read Paulo Coelho’s best-selling novel which was “The Alchemist” was further boosted.
After reading the blurb, I became captivated by Santiago, the main character in the novel. He was an Andalusian shepherd boy who wanted to fulfill his dream of being able to travel. On his journey, he met different people who contributed in one way or another to his growth and learning. He had achieved his greatest life lessons through different obstacles in search of his Personal Legend.
I kept on talking about the book to my friends; however, I could not find it in the National Bookstore. Having found out how frustrated I was, a friend decided to send me the book as a gift.
Being full of enthusiasm, it did not take too long for me to finish the entire novel. From then on, it has been one of my favorites because of its simplicity and moving messages. I found the “Alchemist” fascinating, optimistic, enlightening and inspirational. In fact, I highlighted those quotes from the book that I wanted to reread. This is definitely one of the books that I would like to recommend to all readers. It had influenced me to a great degree. With that in mind, I am sharing you now the insights that I have from reading “The Alchemist.”
1. Dare to Dream and Make It Happen
We need to push an action if we are aiming for something. We must not just let things happen, instead, we have to make it happen. That will only be possible if we are going to stop dreaming, and start doing actions. It is time to walk the talk. Nothing is impossible no matter how big our dreams are. Everything starts with one step.
2. Be Brave and Never Give Up
Crying does not mean we are weak. Santiago cried when his money was stolen from him after his arrival in Africa. Instead of giving up, he continued on his search for his Personal Legend. Crying just shows that we are human. We have our own strengths and flaws. It does not matter how many times we stumble and fall, what matters is how we rise after those cruel punches. We need to defy all odds. Stick to the goal and be stubborn in targeting the one that we really want.
3. Enjoy life by living in the present
Dwelling on the past or being anxious about the future is something that impedes us to appreciate those things given to us in the present. There are times that we get so fixated on things that are already finished that we cannot do anything about. Time spent brooding on those things are time wasted. What we need to do is to focus on our present in preparation to what we want to have in the future.
4. Listen to your heart and do not underestimate yourself.
We are here on Earth for a purpose, and that is to follow what God put in our heart to do. Limiting our capabilities just because of our present circumstances is a “Big No!” Obstacles and failures are there to make us stronger individuals. Don’t focus so much on roadblocks and setbacks. Instead, focus on what we want and stop bullying our own selves.
5. Aspire to be always better than what you are now
Learning is a continuous process; it does not stop at a certain age. In fact, behind every successful endeavor of a person lies a long history of struggles. Even though those struggles slow down our energy that sometimes results in errors but ultimately it creates a difference. We learn from our failures and that makes us smarter. We can always be better for there is always a room for improvement. In fact, progress should be one of the personal values that each one of us must possess.
